Imagine if you could repair your own cell phone. Would you keep it longer? Doing so would reduce the consumption of materials used to create the phone, and minimize the amount of hazardous eWaste out there. Designing products to be modular and repairable and use clean materials is a basic principle of sustainability. But it’s not always easy to strike a balance between sustainability and company revenue. Amsterdam phone manufacturer Fairphone implemented basic principles of sustainability into a real smartphone that anyone can easily repair, is manufactured in fair working conditions, and does not use conflict materials.
