The XPRIZE $1 Million Next-Gen Mask Challenge
Are you looking for a way to make a difference while you hone your CAD skills? How about a chance to win a million dollars? Autodesk is excited to announce that we are partnering with XPRIZE to provide students access to the tools they need to participate in this exciting challenge.
The XPRIZE Next-Gen Mask Challenge is an invitation to young innovators ages 15–24 to shift the cultural perception around mask-wearing behavior. This four-month challenge asks participants to develop fashionable, high-end, surgical-grade consumer face masks for a chance to win the $1 million prize.
Why is this challenge important?
The science is undeniable—wearing masks helps prevent the spread of COVID-19. Citing an analysis by Goldman Sachs Research, if masking increased 15%, it “could prevent the need to bring back stay-at-home orders that would otherwise cost an estimated 5% of gross domestic product, or a projected cost of $1 trillion.” We know that wearing masks does not come without inconveniences. Masks can be ill-fitting, uncomfortable, not breathable, and the most effective masks are often unavailable or expensive.
Challenge: We need an alternative—face masks that are readily accessible and affordable, functional for our everyday lives, fit a wide variety of wearers, and are effective in protecting the wearer and the community.
Today’s young innovators are the future of design and engineering. We know you are capable of bringing new, out-of-the-box ideas. Now is the time to show your creative, curious, innovative spirit and make a positive impact in the world.
How do I sign up for the challenge?
Whether you’re a team or an individual looking for a team, potential competitors should visit this site to read the Challenge guidelines and register. But hurry! Registration closes on September 15, 2020.
